One year anniversary

October 1, 2009

One year since a certain surgery? One year of dating somebody? No, silly! The United Colon Vlog is now one year old!

It’s hard to believe an entire year has passed since I started this project. I originally just wanted to make a video or two about how to empty an ostomy pouch…and look where it’s gotten me now! Because of you and your support, this site has grown by leaps and bounds.

Currently, there are 118 videos on this site that have been watched over 127,000 times by people all over the world! 118 videos about colitis, ileostomies, and J-pouches that didn’t exist a year ago. And many of these videos are generated by ideas from you all, so thank you! Keep sending me emails and asking me questions. Conversing with you all and learning your stories is truly the best part of this job.

Many of you have told me that you’ve watched all of my videos. If that’s true, then you’ve spent over 12 hours watching my videos! For those who have done this, I thank you for your investment and I hope you learned something in those 12 hours.

Here’s another fun fact. Assuming all 127,000 of those videos were watched in their entirety (I could only fantasize to be that consistently engrossing), it would take over 544 days to watch them back to back!

That’s the equivalent of watching 17,408 episodes of Modern Marvels back to back. (I threw that in there for Matthew, who loves those kinds of statistical comparisons).

So what’s in store for the vlog next? Well, many, many projects are going on simultaneously. First, I’m continuing to make videos, and am well underway to making the next 100 videos. Believe me, I think there’s issues to cover still.

Second, I’m working on featuring more videos from others. Mine isn’t the only voice in the IBD community. If you ever come across a good video or make one yourself, tell me about it!

Third, the translation project is continuing forward, as many internationals are finding the translated videos very beneficial. But it takes a long time to translate videos, so if you can help in any way let me know!

Fourth, I need some more community-submitted material. You’ve heard me talk about the Gutbending Declaration before. The first video has gotten lots of positive responses from people, so if you’ve lived with an ostomy make the declaration and send me your video!

Additionally, I’m looking for any kind of artwork to display alongside mine that has something to do with healing from disease. I know there are artists out there so send me your work.

Finally, I want to call you to action to consider supporting Camp Oasis. This is a great outreach for children and any money you can give to these camps is greatly appreciated!

I think that’s all! Again, let me know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions! Help me continue to make this site the number one video education site online for inflammatory bowel disease!

Keep fighting,
~Dennis

100,000 video views

August 8, 2009

Hey everybody,

I just wanted to drop by and give everybody a quick update on what’s going on with me. Last week I was a volunteer cabin counselor at Camp Oasis, an IBD summer camp for kids. More on that later but everything went fantastic! Tomorrow I’m off to backpack for a week, so I will continue to be out of commission. I responded to a few emails and comments very quickly just now but for those who have sent longer messages I will get to them next week. Keep patient and continue to send me messages about any questions or concerns you have!

On a more important note, sometime this past week the video views for this vlog exceeded 100,000! That’s a fantastic number and makes me very excited. When I first started this vlog it wasn’t as popular, as most things are in the beginning, and I made a secret goal of exceeding 100,000 video views within a year. That was on October 1, 2008. I had no clue how I would reach this number but they say to set your sights high so I did. And now that goal has been reached with two months to spare! Thanks to everybody for all your support with this project, things are going very well and there’s more to come in the future.

To give you some side context, some college friends and I once had a YouTube channel up that featured various comedy videos of our college antics, the kind of stuff you usually see on YouTube. We thought we were pretty funny but I guess not. It took that channel over 3 and a half years to breach the 100,000 views mark. The lesson is: keep your projects focused and targeted at a specific audience, even if it’s a niche audience like the IBD community, and success will come your way.

Keep fighting,
~Dennis

100 videos now up!

July 10, 2009

Hey everybody, another milestone was reached yesterday here at the United Colon Vlog: 100 original videos now posted! When I first started this project I figured I’d make a few videos about my journey with flare-ups and surgeries and then do a video about emptying an ileostomy appliance and changing it. Once I got started in this project I realized how much ulcerative colitis had changed my life and affected every part of it. I started making videos about all aspects of living with colitis, living with an ileostomy, and living with a J-pouch.

This is how we end up with 100 videos.

Some of these videos are more popular than others. But for those of you who are new to this site or who have followed it half-heartedly for a few months, now might be a good time to go back and check out some videos you have missed.

And increasingly I am finding more videos about ulcerative colitis and ileostomies from others, plus three people are currently helping me translate select videos into other languages, bringing the total videos available on this site even higher.

If you are thinking I’m running out of ideas, you have another thing coming! I have a list of video ideas that I add to every week. Most likely all of them won’t be made into videos but certainly I have enough ideas for the next 100 videos. I have a ton of videos planned describing various medical procedures and issues–I really haven’t focused on that too much these first 100 videos. Plus I have more videos about ileostomies and J-pouches planned as I haven’t covered everything there is to know yet.

And, of course, I’ll continue to update you on my progress as the months tick by. Recently I gave you a six month J-pouch update–there will be more updates in the future.

With any luck, and a little help for you, I will soon get some Gutbending videos made, but I can’t do that if I don’t get videos from you guys. Some day, too, I’d like to make original videos featuring other peoples’ stories, as my perspective is only one perspective.

If you have any video ideas, reply to this post and let me know! I have fun doing this project and hope to continue it long into the future!

Keep fighting,
~Dennis

50,000 video views!

April 22, 2009

Hey everybody, I just wanted to let you know that the collective video views of my 80+ videos just surpassed the 50,000 mark yesterday! It has only taken six and half months since releasing my first video to reach this goal. The success of this vlog goes back to all of you, my viewers. I cannot thank you enough for watching my videos, passing them on to others, and most importantly, contacting me and telling me your story. I have talked to so many people through this project and I appreciate every one of those conversations.

Help me reach my goal of surpassing the 100,000 mark by September 30 this year. I think we can do it. If you peruse Crohn’s and colitis forums or message boards, post a link back to my videos or even post one of my videos right in the forum if you are able to. All of my videos have embed codes next to them on YouTube, allowing you to easily pass them around the internet.

If you have your own website, give me a shout and tell me where it’s at. I’m willing to tell everybody about your site if you let me know where to find it.

And most importantly, if you have found this site useful and think others would find it useful, talk to your local GI doctor or ostomy nurse or surgeon about getting the United Colon Vlog into your hospital. I’m able to send you printed materials free of charge as long as you bring them into your clinic. Visit this page for more information.

Keep fighting,
~Dennis
