CCFA Webcast: The A to Z of Treating UC

July 14, 2010

The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America is hosting a webcast for patients with ulcerative colitis on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 1:00 pm Eastern. The event will be hosted by national expert, Thomas Ullman, MD, associate professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Topics to be covered are:

  • Current and emerging treatment approaches to ulcerative colitis
  • Long-term disease maintenance and quality of life
  • Considerations when discussing options with your healthcare provider

You can register for the 75 minute conference by clicking here. You can participate either by phone or online, but if you’re reading this on an online vlog, I’m guessing you’ll choose the online option.

I’ve listened in to one of these CCFA teleconferences before and they work real well. If you are looking for up to date medical information, be sure to tune in!

Keep fighting,

Star in a UC Medication Commercial

February 12, 2010

I was recently contacted by an advertising agency that is looking for patients with ulcerative colitis for a medicine advertisement they are developing. The ad will be in print but some people may be videotaped.

The company has chosen not to reveal which medication they are looking for. The reasoning is, they want people to contact the agency to see if they are genuinely interested in the ad, as the agency doesn’t want people to say they are on this medicine just to get in the ad.

When contacting them, give the agency the information you want and if you fit the criteria they will contact you and set up a phone interview. The photo shoot is in NYC or Philadelphia, but they are accepting people from anywhere in the country and will pay any expenses to get to the shoot.

If interested, the following is the complete casting call information.

Keep fighting,
~Dennis

Help the ACCU with Research

July 14, 2009

Since starting my Spanish-subtitled video series, I have been in contact with the Association of Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis in Malaga, Spain. From what I can tell this group is similar to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America that most of us should be familiar with. I don’t understand Spanish very well but it seems that they have a very informative and helpful site for people with IBD.

Currently they are working on a research project to find out the differences in care and experiences people from around the world have with their IBD. So far they have interviewed people from Mexico, Spain, Belgium, Chile, Morocco, Argentina, and Uruguay. Unfortunately for most of my readers, the interviews are in Spanish and occasionally French. But with the help of FreeTranslation.com you can get the gist of the interviews.

Currently they are looking to interview IBD-sufferers in America to gain knowledge of our experiences. If you can assist with this project they’d greatly appreciate it. Simply fill out this questionaire and email it to Juan Rodriguez when finished. It shouldn’t take you more than five minutes.

Win NASCAR Tickets with Fundraising

July 8, 2009

The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America has teamed up with NASCAR driver and ulcerative colitis patient Scott Speed to offer two tickets to a Sprint Cup Series race to the winner of the Fast and Furious Take Steps Fundraising Contest.

Take Steps, as many of you know, is a series of fundraising walks to raise money for IBD research. Between now and August 31, 2009, for every $100 raised you will get one chance to win the tickets, which is for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, November 8th, 2009.

The winner will also get a chance to meet CCFA spokesman Scott Speed, driver of the number 82 Red Bull Toyota.

For those looking for ways to get involved and to help fight the battle against IBD, don’t miss this opportunity.

Over the past two years I’ve started watching NASCAR with a friend and it actually is an exciting sport.

Keep fighting,
~Dennis

Support the CCFA on Facebook

May 9, 2009

For those of you on Facebook you might be interested to know that the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America has a Facebook page that you can support. I recommend that everybody with Crohn’s or colitis join this group and voice your support to all your friends that you have IBD and there’s nothing to be ashamed of.

Of note is a new program the CCFA has started on Facebook. Called the IBD Virtual March on the Hill, it gives users a chance to show their support for IBD research by taking a virtual “step.” For each step taken, Shire PLC, a pharmaceutical company, will donate $1 to IBD research. So it’s a win-win for everybody–you click your support on Facebook, money gets donated for research.

At the time of this writing, 1,500 steps had been taken, and the goal is 30,000, so get steppin!

Keep fighting,

Asacol.com’s New UC Community

March 7, 2009

Hey everybody, I want to draw your attention to a new program on Asacol.com’s website called UC Community. This is a place where people can post their own stories with ulcerative colitis and a place where colitis sufferers can ask questions of each other.

After studying communication in school for a number of years, I am initially suspicious of companies that start outreach projects like this. I tend to think they care more about improving their own image than actually helping people.

However, even if Asacol is trying to improve its image, it’s hard to see how that leads to more business for the company. For the majority of colitis sufferers, we tend to take the medicines that our doctors tell us to take. I’m guessing few patients go to their doctors and demand to be on Asacol, or any other drug. Instead we listen to the doctors because we trust the doctors, and we stop using medicine only when it doesn’t work for us anymore, not because another medicine is more attractive.

The ideas of preference and choice don’t really factor in when it comes to taking colitis medicine.

Because of that, I think Asacol.com is trying to help others. Check it out, anyway. There’s not much content there yet as it just started. I plan on posting a short story on there soon. You should post your story too, it might just help somebody. You don’t need to register and it only takes five minutes.

Keep fighting,

~Dennis
