Ostomystory: Staying hydrated with an ostomy

February 10, 2013

Laura from Ostomystory talks about hydration with an ostomy. For those you have an ostomy, you know this is VERY important, as your small intestine does not absorb water as well as the colon. Her tips, though, are just as applicable to those of us with a J-pouch, or even those with IBD suffering a flare-up.

Keep fighting,

Question: Do you have any tips on how to stay hydrated? Respond to this post with a comment!

  1. Hi, I have an ileostomy for 10 months now because of a blockage in my intestine, probably due to pain medication. I have a problem of leakage through stoma paste being put on the sticky part of the bag, as well as I started to use elastic barrier strips around the flange (not sure what to call it). It seems the matter in the bag just goes through the sides. I thought it was because I was cutting the hole too big and the matter was getting stuck under the flange, but it also happened after I made a smaller hole. Do you have any ideas as to why or what i’m doing wrong?

    • Hi Chris,

If you are having problems and have tried everything you can think of, trying calling your ostomy supply company directly (Holoster, Coloplast, whichever products you use). Their customer service reps are very helpful, and oftentimes they will recommend different products to try, and will even send you free samples until you find something that works!

  2. Hi Chris, tricky problem. Could have many causes. Is the skin around your stoma flat? Does you stoma stick out, or is it on or below skin level? Some people use paste, others flexible rings. It might depend on how it is applied. Sometimes a convex flange helps. Do you have a stoma nurse you can contact? They usually have tons of good advice. You do not have to fight this battle on your own!
