Ulcerative colitis: Kids’ voices
March 2, 2011Another video from Children’s Hospital Boston provides the perspective of children with ulcerative colitis. I’m sure some people look at these professional videos and think the kids are too positive, too optimistic, that everybody doesn’t do this well with ulcerative colitis. And that’s certainly true; I met kids at Camp Oasis who were in very rough shape, worse than I’ve ever been.
But it’s also true that I met a lot of kids who were coping with the disease very, very well. There are success stories out there with ulcerative colitis, people who can manage the disease with medication and not surgery. It’s important for those of us who’ve had surgery to remember that. Cynicism doesn’t do anybody any good. And as we all know, there is currently no cure for this disease, so the unfortunate reality is: while these kids all look healthy and well in this video, chances are some of them will get very sick again in the future.
And that’s the worst part about this disease: the uncertainty of future health.
Check out the Children’s Hospital YouTube page for more videos.
Keep fighting, kids!
