FAQ #3: Physical and emotional feelings after surgery

February 23, 2010

This video covers physical pain and limitations following surgery, and my recovery as well as the emotional turmoil it caused. Often times physical pain of surgery and the body transformation is easier to deal with than the emotional. However, in a situation such as what I went through, there was no other alternative than to accept and deal with the hand that I was dealt. You don’t have to like it, but you do have to live with it. There are so many ways to cope. Each of us has to find the best fit for ourselves. If you’ve had issues dealing with physical and emotional feelings regarding your surgery or illness, feel free to email me at Nadia@UCVlog.com or post a comment!

  2. My best friend will be on the table for her colectomy on the 26th of this month. I have posted a plea for help on 4 diff. sites, w/ no response! What about the friends of someone going through this? I asked simply, is there anything you wish you would have thought to bring to the hospital, and didn’t and really missed having? Nothing!! I am having surgery the same week and need her to know I am there with her and i have been on every site imaginable! So far my little gift box has 3 things in it! I don’t know where her stoma will be to order anything on-line and stoma nurse is next week and there’s no time. All we want to do is make things alittle bit easier for our friends and it’s such a small ting! Why won’t you let us help you? I am not alone in asking this question..Helpless and hurt

    • I’m sorry to hear that you cannot find help in this situation. Facing surgery is a frightening time for anyone, and your frustration can be very high. I hope I can help. Things that I wish that I would have in the hospital with me everytime I am there, are personal momentos; photos, books, a stuffed animal (thats kinda cheesy) but I liked it, magazines or puzzle books to pass the time. Maybe a nice idea would be to make a playlist on an ipod, or a CD of comfort music to pass time when your friend needs to relax. Just knowing that you would be there, would be the best gift of all. Once you both recover from your surgeries, you can lend each other a lot of comfort and support. Having a friend who feels what you are going through is priceless and that compassion is such a comfort at such a tough time. Those things will make it easier. Nothing about this is truly easy but hopefully these touches will help pass this time with some ease. Let me know if you need anything, a shoulder to cry on or more questions answered. I will help in any way I can. Thank you and Good Luck with everything Sherry. Your Friend, Nadia

  3. Thank you Nadia for this encouragement. It’s mainly the emotional trauma of thinking or imagining what my poor little body went thru in the sudden surgery I just had 2 weeks ago. I’m afraid I’ll never heal or be ok again. It’s all just scary. Today I am going to try to relax more & allow as much time as it takes for the healing process. Your video & sweetness were very reassuring, thanks. It’s also reassuring to listen to someone else as a patient reminding me that I am not alone, as sometimes I do feel that way. I’m so happy you’re doing so well!
