Takedown surgery scars

April 3, 2009

I’ve done a video once before about my scars after my colectomy surgery. Now you can see my scars post-takedown surgery.

Keep fighting,
~Dennis

Question: How do you feel about your scars? Comment on this post!

  1. Not bad at all Dennis! I had the open surgery and thankfully like you, the scar is healing well. I don’t know what my stoma scar will look like after takedown, especially since I don’t know if it will be left opened or closed. I guess yours was closed? I wonder how the surgeon determines whether it should be left opened or closed. Open is kind of scary though I must say but when they close it, there is apparently a 50% chance of infection and reopening would make an even worse scar. Do you have any strange feeling around where the stoma was When did the stoma scar officially heal to the point where you could swim or take a bath? Bye for now

    • Hi Marianne, I did have a closed scar. I guess I don’t know much about the difference between open and closed. We took the bandage off and day two and I could shower right away, no problem with water coming into contact with it. I started swimming again about two months later but not because of the scar, that’s just when I got my energy back and my j-pouch under better control.

Right now the skin directly next to the scar still feels a little numb but that’s about it!
