J-pouch: Knowing when to go to the bathroom
March 25, 2009Quite a few people have asked me about the functioning of a j-pouch. Specifically, they want to know: how will they know when to go to the bathroom? Does the body let you know you have to have a bowel movement, or are you constantly in a state of uncertainty about when the next time to go is?
Fortunately, you can put your worries behind you! Your body is usually good about letting you know when you need to use the bathroom.

Question: For the j-pouchers, is your body pretty good about telling you when to go to the bathroom? Take one minute and comment on this post!

Hey I just discovered this site and it is wonderful. I wish I would have found it before I had my j-pouch surgery.
As far as my body telling me when to go, yes at the begining it took some getting used to but now(about year later) I am doing pretty good on when to go and how long I can go without using the bathroom.
I have had my j-pouch for 8 years. I remember being very concerned about this topic prior to surgery – how would I know? How much time would I have once I did know? Would I be running to the bathroom at a moment’s notice?
The good news is that I can honestly say it it not a concern for me. I was even fortunate enough to have a beautifully functioning pouch immediately after the takedown surgery. I get a ‘normal’ urge that builds the longer I wait. I know how long before I can’t wait anymore- and I can usually wait several hours, if needed (Although I prefer not to)
