Anal discharge after surgery

February 20, 2009

After your J-pouch is constructed, you will have some occasional discharge. This is before you start using your J-pouch officially, before your takedown. This is normal and generally not a cause for a concern. However, if you have excessive discharge, have pain still several weeks out from surgery, or if you have blood, mention it to your doctor. People can get pouchitis before they start using their J-pouch. It’s better to stay on top of this rather than wait until you have a problem.

Keep fighting,

  1. Dennis,
Was wondering where you were this week..hope you are doing better and that the lung clots are nothing serious at all. I’ve done step 1 and still have the sigmoid colon so I still have a tiny bit of colitis left (one discharge per day with blood, mucus and some pain). I don’t know if it is standard procedure but you did not seem to have that after your step 1. Of course, after step 2, this will be gone so I should have the same experience as you and hopefully no pain. Marianne

    • Hi Marianne,

During my first surgery they removed my entire colon and left only my rectum. That could be why I had less problems than you, even though my rectum, too, technically still had colitis.

I’m starting to feel well otherwise.

      Dennis
