Passing gas with a J-pouch

January 23, 2009

My experience the first four weeks with passing gas from my j-pouch. I don’t know if my explanation for why it is hard to pass gas is physically accurate or not but it makes sense to me. If anybody can confirm my theories or not let me know. Otherwise, for everybody else waiting for their takedown surgery, hopefully this video gives you a further sense of what it’s like living with a j-pouch.

Keep fighting,

~Dennis

Question: Are you able to pass gas with your j-pouch? If so, how long after your takedown surgery did it take to pass gas? Leave a reply below!

  1. Isn’t this a good thing not to be able to pass gas?

    • Yes, in many ways it is. Too much gas and the pouch fills up faster and can be uncomfortable. A minor inconvenience, I suppose.

  2. I remember reading somewhere that people have an easier time passing gas with J-pouch while laying down. You’re only 4 weeks out, give it time. I have passed gas with the pouch, and it’s nothing special. The ability hasn’t given me any noticeable advantage, I can’t go longer in between BMs, and the ability also comes and goes. Somedays I’ll be able to do it 4 times, other times I go 4 days without passing gas.

  3. itll get better!! i can toot with the best of them!! it took several months. i feel gassy still sometimes, and it takes it sweet time, but itll happen for you. also, your bm’s will become formed and more normal…

  4. In my case, I can pass gas but only when I lie down. I had my takedown June 12, 09. I seem to have more gas late in the evenings and I can’t put a finger on why that is. Is it large meals? I’ll get a different reaction even when I eat the same foods and quantity. Sometimes I have gas other times I don’t. At times I take tablets to eliminate gas if I’m someplace where I can’t lie down and relax. I do this because I get a pressure that seems to push on the sphincter and it hurts. It’s gets painful when it keeps up for long time. I need to find a way to eliminate gas because I can’t be taking tablets all of the time.

  5. In my case, I can pass gas each time I empty my bowels but for me its is very embrassing its loud. Its just like the gas in the stomach is pushing out the stools. it can be very stressful especially when you are using toliet outside. Anyone have such problem or experience pls share. Thanks

  6. I have the same problem as Kim with gas each time I empty my bowels. It’s loud and embarrasing for me as well. I’m 3 years post take-down and it doesn’t look like it is going to get any better.

  7. It’s been now almost five years since my takedown. Luckily I was able to pass gas really soon but only laying down, facing down, in other positions, a leakage is most possible. A couple of times even facing down, leaks occur. Lately, my pouch is always full of gas. It doesn’t matter the food or anything, I feel bloated most of the times. I have develop a great control of when I need to empty my j-pouch but has not been able to get rid of gas. At the end of the day, the pain of holding your gases is there. My best wishes for all the people that are reading this blog. Hang in there tight because life with much easier with a j-pouch than my ulcerative colitis.

  8. Hello Pam and Kim,
I just came across your post and have the same issue. I’ve had my surgery since 1990 and still find bathroom issues ruling my life because of the embarrassing explosive gas many times when I go the bathroom. I’ve learned to hold it for hours, until a safe bathroom opportunity is available, with accompanying gas pains which is no fun! Let me know if you’ve found any solutions. I’ve mentioned it to the doctor who checks my pouch every other year and he just looks at me like he’s never heard of this problem. my best,
    KiKi
