Losing Control pt. 1
October 27, 2008For those who’ve been in the middle of a bad flare up, you know exactly what I am talking about with this video. For those on the outside, we UCers try to hide that these unfortunate accidents happen, as you can maybe imagine after seeing this video.
For the record, losing control is far worse than breaking a bag.
Especially when you never envisioned it happening to you.
The “pt. 1″ signifies that I didn’t lose control just once. Some day I’ll tell the rest of these stories. And there are more than 4.
Keep fighting,
-Dennis
Question: How bad did your colitis get out of control? Did you have any mishaps in public? What did you do to get out of the situation?

Hi Dennis,
Thanks for your honesty especially with the personal nature of this topic (losing control). I too have had many accidents. I’ve had them in Target, Home Depot, Walmart(having UC I really hate going into the big box stores), soccer games and even in church. I travel with a small potty in my van and have had to pull over to the side of the road dozens of times to use it because I wouldn’t even make it to the next gas station. Yikes, Beth
Hi Dennis,
Are you on any meds now? How long did it take before you were off the meds that they gave you right after surgery. I know they usually prescibe pain meds, but the predisone really threw me. Why do they prescribe that? I am really looking forward to being off all meds.
About three weeks after surgery I was finished with all medicine, including the prednisone they give after surgery. During surgery they gave me a dose of prednisone, probably to dial my immune system down so that my body doesn’t reject what they are doing? And then I had to stay on it for three weeks because it’d be too hard on the body to take a dose of it once and then to quit again.

My worst was when I was out with a friend and my 7 month old son. We were in Whole Foods and I knew I had to go right. now. I ran to the bathroom, but only made it about halfway before losing control. I went the rest of the way, baby in arms, and cleaned myself up. I just threw out my underwear and kept going. I didn’t tell my friend what happened. We went to Target next (why didn’t I just go home?!?) and I had an accident again. This time I was standing in the middle of the store. I told my friend what had happened, she took the baby and went and bought me some underwear and pants while I headed to the bathroom. I cleaned myself up and she brought the new clothes into the bathroom. What a low point! UC is just so cruel sometimes!
That was very candid and most of us know all to well what losing control is like. I can’t remember all the times that this has happened to me, but it is always in the back of my mind that it will happen again. Reason 18,935 that I can’t wait until my surgery.
