How to change an ostomy appliance

October 13, 2008

Hey everybody, this is the video I’ve been waiting for. When you get your new ileostomy, the ostomy nurses are very helpful in showing you how to change it and take care of it. But before surgery, one has almost no knowledge of how stomas work. Hopefully this video can give those of you considering surgery one less thing to think about–by showing you how easy it is to change an appliance.

YouTube has a ten-minute limit on videos so this one is divided into two parts, the first 8:44 and the second 4:56. It might be kind of gross to those with weak stomachs, but it’s important for the world to see how this works.

Keep fighting,

~Dennis

Question: Do you change your ostomy pouch differently? How have you changed your methods over time? Help others by commenting below!

  3. Hi Dennis, I have been watching your videos, and I think it’s great what you are doing. I live in Mexico, and I have been searching web pages to help us out, cause my brother has just come home 3 days ago with an ileostomy, and have been having a lot of trouble, cause the ring around the ileostomy leaks, and we have had to change the appliance two times a day, and his skyn is getting hurt. I saw you use a kind of clay, could you tell me the name of it so we can buy it and try it out? And the spray you use too please. Thank you so much!
